Dynamometers


Dynamometers from KLaS

We are able to assist in all aspects of Engine Testing. From supply of standard products to full turnkey systems, KLaS has a wide range of experience and knowledge.

Engine Testing and Development has become a very complex and involved practice. With the introduction of new and more stringent regulation for noise and emission outputs, engineers require a system that is very flexible and able to interface to a wide variety of test system devices.Using support and systems provided by KLaS, we are able to assist with the supply of testbed solutions required for the complete life cycle of an engine's development.

There are three main types of dynamometers used in engine-testing that are available from KLaS; Eddy Current, Hydraulic and AC Motors.


Eddy Current Dynamometers

These are used for testing and development where accurate control and stability are required. Eddy Current dynamometers provide high torque and high speed capabilities, making them ideal for testing of both gasoline and diesel engines. Fast control response times allow some transient testing to be carried out using this type of dynamometer.

The KLaS range of Eddy Current Dynamometers (EC Range manufactured by SAJ) utilise a cast iron housing that is CNC machined to extremely high tolerances. The housing is used to cradle precision deep-groove ball bearings. The bearing housing is firmly clamped with a cast iron bed-plate that ensures very low friction while maintaining a very strong and rigid mounting. Unlike flexture support methods, the KLaS range of Eddy Current Dynamometers are more able to withstand mechanical shocks that are typically seen during engine testing.

Unlike most other types of eddy current dynamometer, the EC Range from KLaS only requires a maximum of 4A current to the coil. This greatly reduces power consumption and heating of coils, thus extending the life of the dynamometer.


Hydraulic Dynamometers

This type of dynamometer is commonly used for testing of large engines where high torque is required, such as big marine engines or Generator Sets.

The KLaS Range of Hydraulic Dynamometers (HD Range manufactured by SAJ) utilise a fast response outlet control valve with an elctro-hydraulic servo controller to ensure accuracy if control.

By using oil injected half couplings that are supported by deep-groove ball bearings and the use of a split casing construction, the HD Range are very easy to maintain.

The HD Range supports power of up to 6700kW and maximum torque of 50000Nm. High Speed, cropped rotor versions are also available.



AC Dynamometers

Modern testing can require that the engine is rigorously tested to standards as though it were in the car. With AC Machines it is possible to carry out full vehicle drivetrain simulation, including simulation of manual gear changes.

KLaS is able to offer a wide range of AC Motor and Drive Cabinets that interface to the REO range of control system technologies. Typically in an AC motor based system a high precision Torque Flange is used for highly accurate measurement and control of torque.

We select the best specification AC Dynamometer and Drives combination that are tailored to meet the clients specifications.
